Urban Shadows

Street photography exploring light and architecture

Urban Shadows

The city awakens differently in winter. The low angle of the sun creates dramatic shadows that transform familiar streets into geometric art installations. This editorial series explores the relationship between urban architecture and human presence.

I spent weeks studying the patterns of light as it moved through the downtown corridors. Each building became a sundial, casting shadows that shifted throughout the day like a slow-motion dance. The challenge was to capture these fleeting moments when light, shadow, and human activity aligned perfectly.

The series focuses on three key locations: the modernist plaza where office workers cross during lunch hours, the narrow alleyway where delivery trucks create temporary obstacles that people navigate around, and the grand staircase of the courthouse where the afternoon sun creates a natural spotlight.

What emerged was a visual narrative about adaptation - how people unconsciously adjust their movements to the rhythms of the city, how shadows become temporary shelters, and how architecture shapes not just our physical paths but our daily choreography.

Each photograph in this series was captured using only available light, emphasizing the authentic relationship between the urban environment and its inhabitants. The black and white treatment removes the distraction of color, focusing attention on form, texture, and the subtle interactions between light and shadow.
